RYA Standards & Safety

Recognised training, documented safety, clear certification.

Alicante Sea Academy preserves structured RYA procedures across course delivery, vessel readiness, certificate handling, emergency response and safeguarding.

RYA Training Centre logo

Alicante Sea Academy is proud to be a RYA Recognised Training Centre (RTC), a status awarded only to organisations that meet high international standards in maritime training. As an RTC, the academy is authorised to deliver RYA-certified courses such as Powerboat Level 2, Day Skipper Motor, and Yachtmaster Motor, under the oversight of the Royal Yachting Association (UK).

Recognition means instructors are professionally qualified, training vessels are regularly inspected and maintained to high safety standards, and courses follow a consistent, structured syllabus designed to develop real competence at sea. Students receive officially registered RYA certificates where the relevant course and assessment criteria are met.

The training vessels Marlos and the 12-metre motor yacht Keyolha are maintained to rigorous standards. Checks before and after training sessions include propulsion, steering, fuel and electrical systems. Engines are serviced according to manufacturer guidelines and recorded in maintenance logs.

Safety equipment including lifejackets, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, VHF radios, flares and MOB recovery aids is inspected monthly and renewed before expiry. Prior to every training session, a risk assessment is conducted and a full safety briefing is delivered to students.

For Powerboat Level 2, successful candidates receive their certificate directly from the training centre upon completion. The certificate is completed, signed and stamped by the instructor and the Principal or Chief Instructor, then registered through the RYA online Certificate Registration Hub.

For Day Skipper Practical, successful students are issued an RYA Day Skipper Practical certificate. For Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore, candidates must pass an independent practical examination conducted by an external RYA examiner. The examiner submits results to RYA headquarters and the official Yachtmaster certificate is issued directly by the RYA.

  • Pre-departure briefings cover lifejacket use, MOB recovery, fire safety, first aid access, VHF emergency channels and abandon ship procedures.
  • Vessels are equipped with retrieval systems and follow RYA MOB drills, which are practised regularly and taught during appropriate courses.
  • Instructors are first aid certified and carry marine first aid kits. VHF Channel 16 and local working channels are monitored during training.
  • Serious incidents or near misses are documented and reviewed internally. Where appropriate, reports are shared with the RYA under their incident notification protocol.

Alicante Sea Academy is committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all students, including minors and vulnerable adults. The academy follows RYA safeguarding policies and maintains standards covering a designated safeguarding officer, staff conduct, reporting procedures, parental consent, supervision and required checks for staff working with vulnerable groups.

Alicante Sea Academy operates primarily within the sheltered waters of Alicante bay and the surrounding coastline, including the renowned marine reserve of Tabarca Island.

This diverse and well-charted area offers ideal conditions for practical training: calm inshore waters for beginners, more challenging open-sea passages for advanced courses, navigation exercises, anchoring practice and coastal pilotage in a controlled environment.

Training activities are conducted within range of emergency support services, and the area has been risk-assessed to support RYA safety standards.
